Enjoy cycling with a carbon-free e-MTB surrounded by breathtaking, rich nature and wild animals in the Shiretoko area
Hokkaido District Transport Bureau
Shiretoko is a small area located in the eastern part of Hokkaido that is full of rich nature and wild animals such as bears, deer, and foxes. One way to enjoy the area’s natural beauty is mountain biking, and the Shiretoko Cycling Support activity center offers guided cycling tours with various difficulty levels.
The center primarily offers two guided cycling tours, the Kamuiwakka Waterfall e-MTB tour and the Shiretoko Pass Downhill tour, though guests have the ability to add optional tours as well. The bicycles used on both main tours are electric mountain bikes (e-MTB), suitable for a broad range of ages and levels of fitness.
On the approximately two-hour, 22-kilometer Kamuiwakka Waterfall e-MTB tour, you’ll ride through a deep forest and reach the Kamuiwakka Falls. These waterfalls get warmer the higher up you go (around 25-40 degrees Celsius) thanks to underground water that has been heated by Mt. Io, an active volcano, running into the stream.
The second Shiretoko Pass Downhill tour features easy cycling that anyone can enjoy. You will start cycling from the top of Shiretoko Pass at a height of 740 meters, and you can simply enjoy cycling downhill to the sea level. This tour is also about two hours in total and covers a distance of 15 kilometers.
