Come to Onneto Campground to see the nearby mountains reflected in Lake Onneto’s emerald waters. As the light fades, build a campfire near the shore and gaze up at the night sky full of stars. During early summer, enjoy a walk around the lakeshore, blooming with rhododendrons and other wildflowers.
Take a short hike to the Onneto Yunotaki Falls, which features two streams of hot water that flow from a height of thirty meters. This waterfall is the only place in the world to see manganese oxide deposits above ground and has been designated a National Natural Monument.
For more serious hiking, Onneto Campground serves as the perfect base to climb up Mt. Me-akan, an active volcano that has sulphurous pools, steaming craters and far-reaching views of Lake Onneto and beyond. The site is open from the beginning of June to the end of December, and you can take your pick from camping spots that are close to the shore or just inside the forest.
