Onneto Campground

Sleep under the stars by the shore of Lake Onneto

Onneto Campground, located at the western foot of volcanic Mount Meakan, provides the perfect base for exploring Lake Onneto, enjoying its emerald waters, and hiking in the area. There are walking paths around the lake, blooming with rhododendrons and other wildflowers in spring and summer. In fall, the colorful foliage provides a striking contrast to the deep blue-green color of the lake. As the light fades, build a campfire near the shore and gaze up at the night sky full of stars.

A 1.4-kilometer trail from the Onneto Campground parking lot leads to Onneto Yunotaki Falls, a thermal waterfall that flows from natural springs heated by Mount Meakan's volcanic activity.

For more serious hiking, you can climb up Mount Meakan directly from the trailhead that starts at the campground. At the summit, you can take in views of steaming craters, Lake Onneto and mountain ranges beyond. The campground is open from the beginning of June to the end of October.
