Daisen-daki Falls and Chugoku Nature Trail

Visit a beautiful waterfall at the eastern foot of Mount Daisen

This round-trip course takes you along a well-maintained nature trail to Daisen-daki Falls. The route starts at the Ikkoganaru Campground, which is just off National Route 44 on the eastern side of Mount Daisen (1,729 m). After hiking from the campground for about 30 minutes, cross over the Daisen-daki Suspension Bridge and continue hiking for another half an hour. Along the trail you can enjoy the sound of the Kaseda River, as well as the songs of the birds that live in the nearby old-growth woodlands. You can continue hiking to Kawadoko on the western side of Mount Daisen via Oyasumi Pass (1,100 m) for a more challenging hike that takes 6 hours.

This campground features a river that's great for summer paddling. In fall, you can admire the colorful foliage of the old-growth forests that surround the campsite. The nature trail from the campground to Daisen-daki Falls is well kept, and is easy enough even for children of elementary school age to enjoy. However, please remember to submit a hiking registration form at the campground’s office before setting out to the falls. Please also note that the trail is closed from December to early April.

Enjoy views from high above the Kaseda River

Reach the Daisen-daki Suspension Bridge by climbing down Heaven’s Stairs, a very steep flight of stairs about 1 kilometer upstream from Ikkoganaru. This bridge is over 45 meters long and crosses the Kaseda River at a height of 30 meters. From here, you can enjoy great views of the water below.

Feel the power of Daisen-daki Falls

Daisen-daki Falls is located in Jigokudani Valley on the eastern side of Mount Daisen. It is a two-step waterfall with a powerful flow that cascades from a height of 42 meters. It is on the list of Japan’s 100 Best Waterfalls. The falls make a strong impression on visitors at any time of year, but they are particularly striking during autumn when framed by colorful leaves.
