Furepe Falls Snowshoe Trek and Wildlife Watching Tour

Parks Overview Parks Overview

A snowshoe trek to a frozen waterfall with magnificent sea views

This walk begins in a forest, where your guide will help you spot different birds, many of which belong to the great tit family. If there is a good amount of snow, you will wear snowshoes and use poles to walk from the Shiretoko Nature Center to Furupe-no-Taki Falls. After passing through the forest, your guide will lead you through a snow-covered grassland where herds of Ezo deer gather from December to March every year. You may be able to see male deer with huge antlers, grown to impress and attract mates. Ezo red foxes can sometimes be spotted in the snowfield, too. Steller's sea eagles and white-tailed sea eagles can be seen flying above, in the trees, and on the ice floes, hunting for fish.

You will be able to see a clear view of Furupe-no-Taki Falls from an observation deck near a cliff. The winter cold freezes the falls into solid, aqua-blue pillars of ice. Enjoy breathtaking views of ice formations against the backdrop of the vast Sea of Okhotsk. In the colder months, the sea is covered in otherworldly expanses of drift ice.
