Take a trip back in time at a traditional inn from 1908 and enjoy fresh fish and retro charm
San’in Tourism Organization
Located in Mihonoseki, Shimane Prefecture, Mihokan is a kaiseki ryokan inn. Established in 1908, the Honkan (main building) was registered as a Tangible Cultural Property in 2004. Guests can also opt to stay in a renovated kominka home or in the Shinkan building, which has a bath on the seventh floor offering panoramic views of Miho Bay.
Nearby is Sakaiminato, one of Japan's top fishing ports. Fresh seafood such as tuna, matsuba crab, red snow crab, rock oysters, and white squid are abundant in the waters off the coast. Overnight guests can enjoy dinners featuring the fresh flavors of the San'in region’s sea, sourced every morning from the Sakaiminato and Mihonoseki fishing ports.
A short walk from Mihokan is Miho Shrine, which has deep ties to the sea and music. The nostalgic Aoishidatami Street is also nearby, a retro spot that takes its name from the unusual paving stones. When it rains, the stones turn a soft blue, creating a calm atmosphere that enhances the historic townscape and stone-paved roads reminiscent of the 1800s.
How to get there
Fly from Haneda Airport to Yonago Airport (about 1 hour and 20 minutes), then switch to the Sakai Line train to Sakaiminato Station (about 15 minutes). From there, it is a 15-minute drive to the ryokan.
