Explore the solid houses of centuries past, and try your hand at various crafts

Once a mountain farming village, Hida Folk Village (Hida no Sato) has 30 buildings up to 200 years old that show what life was like centuries ago. The village also offers demonstrations of traditional crafts.

Quick Facts

The 30 folk houses are up to 200 years old

The gassho style houses have steeply peaked thatched roofs to allow snow to slide off easily

Inside each building, you will find a glimpse of what day-to-day life was like in the past

How to Get There

You can take a 10-minute bus ride from Takayama Station to Hida Folk Village or travel by foot in about 40 minutes.

A slower life

Hida Folk Village's main feature is the gassho-zukuri houses, which are symbols of the area. Their steeply sloped thatched roofs allow heavy snow to slide right off. Each building, unique in its architecture, exhibits everyday tools of the past.

The buildings are made entirely of natural materials that complement their surroundings. The smell of wood smoke drifting through the village will transport you back to simpler times.

Learn and make

The buildings stage exhibitions on different aspects of life in an occasionally harsh natural environment. The exhibits range from agriculture to local administration.

Experts demonstrate local crafts like weaving and wood carving. You can try your hand at some of these crafts (for a small fee) at the Hida Takayama Crafts Experience Center.
