At Aoya Washi Studio, you can not only appreciate the traditional art of Japanese paper-making, but also experience the craft’s modern innovations. Learn more about handmade Japanese washi paper in the museum, then head to the workshop to try making it yourself.
 
Aoya Washi Studio is located in the eastern part of Tottori Prefecture, between Hiroshima and Kyoto. The studio produces a variety of traditional Japanese paper known as Inshu Washi, after the province’s historic name, which is well-known throughout Japan. Renowned for its durability, Inshu Washi has long been the paper of choice for distinguished writers and calligraphers. Working side by side with an artisan in the workshop, you can learn the secrets of this legendary paper which have been passed down through the generations—and create your very own Inshu Washi.
 
Enjoy a unique sense of tranquility as you learn the delicate, meditative process of creating traditional washi at Aoya. When you leave the studio, you’ll take with you not only some beautiful handmade paper, but also a new appreciation for the master craftsmanship behind it. 

 

How to get there

 

From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Himeji Station (about 30 minutes). From Himeji Station, take the JR limited express train to Tottori Station (about 1 hour 30 minutes). From Tottori Station, take the JR San-In Main Line to Aoya Station (about 35 minutes). The studio is about 15 minutes by taxi or bus from Aoya Station.
