A taste of excellence: Hakushu renowned mineral water is the secret to top-class sake and whisky
Surrounded on all sides by mountains towering over 3000m, including Mt. Fuji, the Southern Alps, and the Yatsugatake Volcanic Group, Yamanashi Prefecture is renowned for the water that springs from these peaks and it produces the largest amount of mineral water in Japan. Hakushu Town in Hokuto City boasts the most famous mineral water source not only in the prefecture, but also nationwide. Hakushu prospered as a post town during the Edo period, and the townscape still retains the atmosphere of olden times. Within this historical town are located the Shichiken Sake Brewery, which produces world-class sake, and the Suntory Hakushu Distillery, which makes excellent whisky.
