Hokkaido | Shirogane Blue Pond of Biei

Biei’s Blue Pond becomes a fantastical wonderland of bright lights and glistening ice in the winter months!

The extraordinarily blue waters of the Shirogane Blue Pond rose to fame after being selected for use as one of Apple’s iOS wallpapers. The blue pond appears differently according to the season and that day’s weather conditions. In spring, the water, mixed with freshly melted snow, appears a light greenish-blue. As summer approaches, the water begins to appear a light blue. In the autumn the water’s surface is painted with the reflected colors of the surrounding warmly colored autumn foliage, and in the deep mid-winter a blanket of pure white snow forms over the pond’s frozen surface. The frozen surface of the Blue Pond is lit up a fabulous array of white and blue lights every evening from November until April. This incredible light display tells an entire story of this silvery winter wonderland through an approximately 10-minute long sequence of light patterns, revealing a side of the pond which cannot be seen during the daytime. Access: Approximately 70 minutes by bus from JR Asahikawa Station. Take the Hokkaido Bus heading towards “Shirogane Onsen” and disembark at “Shirogane Aoike Iriguchi”, from where it is a 5-minute walk to the Blue Pond.
