Yokokan is a garden created in the Edo period (1603-1867). It once served as a villa of the Matsudairas, a former feudal family of the Fukui Domain. It features exceptionally tranquil scenery created by an expansive garden centered around a large pond and a sukiya-style (traditional tearoom style) structure that appears to be floating in the pond. Best of all, visitors can leisurely look out onto the garden from the sitting room just as the feudal lords once did. The garden is consistently ranked high in the Japanese Garden Rankings by an American garden magazine. How to get there
From JR Shin-Osaka Station, take the Hokuriku Line to JR Fukui Station (105 minutes). The garden is a 15-minute walk from the station.
