Built in 1604 after the destruction of Arikoyama Castle at the top of Mount Arikoyama, Izushi Castle sits at the base of Mount Arikoyama and has been a hallmark of the region for centuries.
Izushi Castle Town, a feudal domain under the Tokugawa shogunate, was gradually built around the castle, where a scenic, which allowed for various industries to thrive such as Willow Craft and Izushi Pottery. Although the main buiding was destroyed during the 1800s, some architecture still remains including restored turrets, a bridge, and gate.
On the 3rd of November every year, the Izushi Castle Festival is held to celebrate the town’s samurai history. The highlight of the festival is the Daimyo Gyoretsu, a procession of feudal lords, including men dressed as spear-wielding samurai that parade through the town.
