Meet the "Swimming Jewels" of Niigata Prefecture

Yamakoshi in Niigata Prefecture, with its breathtaking scenery that makes you feel like you are in a painting, is known as the birthplace of Nishikigoi, a type of carp beloved by people all over the world, and are coveted as "swimming jewels".

Yamakoshi receives heavy snowfall during winter, when snow can pile up to more than 4 metres. Nishikigoi is cultivated in rice terraces and pond terraces that are created using the abundant meltwater from the snow, thus taking advantage of the area’s geographical terrain.

The sight of the prized fish swimming in the pond terraces is like looking into a jewellery box. It comes highly recommend visiting the pond terraces in the early morning when the sun rises, and in the evening at sunset, when you can enjoy the swimming Nishikigoi and the beautiful scenery together and experience the unique scenery of Yamakoshi.
