Golden Week is one of the busiest vacation periods Japan, with several consecutive civic holidays maying it a popular season for domestic travellers to take to the rails, and traipse across the Japanese countryside.
During this year's Golden Week (April 29th-May 6th), all Nozomi superexpress trains operating on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen (the fastest tier of bullet train, running between Tokyo and Hakata Stations) will implement a reserved-seating only policy, in order to prevent crowding at stations, and enable a more seamless travel experience.
At the time of writing, other speed tiers of Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen (Mizuho, Hikari, Kodama, and Sakura) will continue to offer both reserved, and non-reserved cars. Reservations can be made in advance on the SmartEX website, as well as at designated ticket machines at JR stations, as well as JR service counters.
