Ride the Ropeway or Hike at Mt. Nokogiri for Some of the Most Stunning Scenery near Tokyo!

Enjoy a day out in nature and experience history at Chiba’s Mt. Nokogiri, a popular day trip destination from Tokyo. For centuries, this uniquely shaped mountain -said to resemble the teeth of a saw- was used for excavating highly sought-after stone. Today, it’s part of the grounds of Nihon-ji Temple, allowing visitors to explore its Buddhist cultural sites and enjoy sweeping views of the southern Chiba coastline, Tokyo Bay, and the Pacific Ocean.

Ride the Nokogiriyama Ropeway, located just a short walk from both JR Hamakanaya Station and the Tokyo Bay Ferry Kanaya Terminal, to reach the mountaintop in minutes. For more adventurous types, there is also a network of hiking trails that will take you from the coast to the peak.

Difficulty: Casual (cable car & hike) / Moderate (hiking only)

Length: Courses ranging from 1.85km to 3.85km

No matter how you decide to summit this mountain, this easily accessible natural attraction makes for the perfect Tokyo area outdoor getaway!

The JR train lines run all around the peninsula, making Chiba an accessible destination for some quick day-trip hikes right outside Tokyo. If you want to spend a full day out of the city, consider staying the night and adding a seaside sunrise or sunset to your itinerary too!
