One of Japan's most popular traditional summer events is fireworks, but do you know the unique local fireworks of Aichi Prefecture's Mikawa area?
"Tezutsu Hanabi" are a type of handheld fireworks originating from Mikawa area, comprised of a cartridge made from hollowed out bamboo, and wrapped in rope. The tube, which is usually around 80cm tall and 10cm wide, is packed with 1.5 to 3 kg of gunpowder. These fireworks let off a magnificent geyser of sparks and sound.
Tezutsu Hanabi have a history of over 450 years, dating back to the Eiroku era. Tezutsu Hanabi festivals are held in many shrines in Toyohashi city, with prayers for rich harvest and good health!
