Saku region, Nagano prefecture, is home to a one-of-a-kind accomodation - a sake brewery that hosts visitors, known as Kurabito Stay. "Kurabito" refers to sake brewers - the historic living quarters of whom have been converted for guests. For the limited time of November-December, and February-March, visitors can also receive lessons under the direct instruction of the brewery's toji (chief brewer), who will explain the crucial work they perform in the fermentation of unrefined sake compounds, and analyzing their composition. This is the first of its kind in Japan, and the world, this is an experience that is bound to alight the hearts of sake fans.
By making what was previously considered the domain of artisans accessible to a wider audience, this program is uniquely interactive when compared to other sake experiences. As an advanced course, this program is limited to repeat visitors who have already participated in the regular 3-day/2-night brewery experience.
Kurabito stay also offers year-round experiences from sake rice cultivation to sake brewing. English-language services are available to meet the demand from visitors who wish to learn more about sake culture, starting with the sake rice production process.
Seminars are also held for inbound visitors to explain the flavor characteristics of each type of sake rice. In addition, a cycling course throughout the rice fields is being developed, allowing guests to both enjoy the countryside's scenery, and better appreciate the link between the region's terroir, and the taste of the finished prodduct,
