Sakura in Ottawa

Though the sakura may be few, there is still plenty to be had in touring Ottawa’s blossoms! This is also the site of The Sakura Project – an effort launched in the 1990’s by Japan’s then-ambassador Michio Mizoguchi, to commemorate the 125th anniversary of Canada’s confederation. Though the cherry blossom trees are more sporadically placed than other cities, hanami in the nation’s capital has the added enjoyment of scavenger hunt! With that said, those not feeling up to the challenge of hunting them down can check our list below!

Confederation Park

Nestled in the heart of Ottawa, between the Ottawa river and the Rideau Canal, Confederation Park is home to several sculptures and monuments to be admired, alongside a modest collection of cherry blossom trees located toward the east side of the park.

Dominion Arboretum

Serving as part of the Central Experimental Farm and National Historic Site of Canada, Dominion Arboretum is home to flora from around the world. There are over 1,700 different species of plants at the Arboretum throughout the year, so naturally cherry blossoms are among them! Though there are several scattered throughout, the best location for hanami is the outer edge of the garden, along Prince of Wales Drive.

Crossing the Alexandra Bridge Ottawa River will take you to Jacques Cartier Park. This site is mainly known for hosting activities for the annual Winterlude Festival, however in springtime it also serves as a venue for hanami. Located on the cusp of Ontario and Quebec, here you can enjoy the sight of the sakura, amid the sound of running water.
