Discover the Stunning Oki Islands
Spectacular views await you at this UNESCO Global Geopark
If you’re itching to get away from the city, head to the Oki Islands, situated off the coast of Shimane Prefecture. Their pristine state has earned them designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark; the entirety of the islands comprise a part of Daisen-Oki National Park, where splendors of the natural world are on display in all four seasons.
The best way to experience Dogo, the largest island, is by guided bus tour. You can choose from two courses, both highlighting the island’s lush nature and picturesque coastline.
The morning tour covers the eastern half of the island and takes you to the ancient Kaburasugi, a giant cedar famous for the peculiar way its branches curve. Another tree along the route is over 800 years old. You'll also get to visit some of the gorgeous coastline for which the island is known.
The afternoon bus tour encompasses the western half of the island. During the tour, you'll visit a local shrine built in a style of architecture unique to the area, the gorgeous Dangyo-no-taki Falls, and a lighthouse. Afterwards, you can catch a boat out to see Rosokujima, a towering rock formation that looks like a lit candle when the setting sun rests on its peak.
Access: From Tokyo Haneda Airport, fly to Osaka Itami Airport (about one hour). After the layover or transfer, fly to Oki Airport (about one hour).
