Admire Architectural Wonders in Historic Kanazawa
From classical to modern, East to West, explore Kanazawa's rich architectural legacy
The city of Kanazawa offers some of the most remarkable architecture tourism in all of Japan, featuring a truly impressive and diverse array of structures. Walk the streets and you'll find everything from classical buildings from the Edo-period (1603-1867) to striking modern creations.
The Kanazawa Architecture Tourism English-language guidebook introduces three courses.
The Legacy of Japanese Traditional Architecture course is a tour of traditional Japanese architecture centering around the Higashi Chaya district, which retains the atmosphere of the feudal era. The Castle and Religious Architecture course begins at Oyama Jinja Shrine and takes visitors around the buildings in Kanazawa Castle Park. Finally, the Mosaic of Contemporary, Award-winning Buildings course introduces the work of many world-famous contemporary architects. This close proximity of contemporary architecture with historic areas is one of the characteristics of Kanazawa.
The guide includes information on each site that can be visited, along with a map and the distance it takes to get to each place on foot. Hours of operation and contact information are also included in the guide for each location.
Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kanazawa Station (about two hours 30 minutes).
