Along Tohoku’s Sanriku Coast sits the small city of Kesennuma, home to fish market that's one of northern Japan's most vibrant. It’s one of Japan’s top oyster producers, which should put it on the map for any foodie.

The tour includes a fascinating firsthand look at oyster farming. Kesennuma’s oysters are produced with utmost care—they’re famous for being massaged by the waves, and restaurants can even order the oysters to exact specifications. The process the Kesennuma fishermen follow takes close to 3 years, which is considerably longer than the average!
