Experience Hidden Japan on This Spectacular Trans-Tohoku Bike Tour
Cycle through 900 km of breathtaking Tohoku vistas in this epic journey across northern Japan
Cycle through some of the most unforgettable landscapes of Japan on this 12-day, 900-km trek through the Tohoku region of northern Honshu. You will join a small group of cyclists pedaling from Tochigi Prefecture all the way up to Aomori Prefecture, going through Fukushima, Yamagata, and Akita and tracing the footsteps of the poet Matsuo Basho (1644–1694) and his travelogue “The Narrow Road to the Deep North.”
This unique adventure will take you along less-trafficked, highly scenic routes that have been carefully selected by the organizers. Highlights include Tsuruga Castle, a samurai fortress that symbolizes the Aizu region. You will ride through spectacular wilderness, rice paddies and quiet villages on your quest, while relaxing in onsen hot springs and staying in traditional inns (ryokan). This Tohoku trek will be the experience of a lifetime.
Participants will log 70-110 km per day. They should be physically fit and able to travel over 100 km of hilly terrain on a sports bike. Van transfers and e-hybrid bikes are available, allowing participants to skip some of the more grueling parts of the journey.
Access: Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo to Nasushiobara Station (about 70 minutes).
