Experience Japan’s Rural Lifestyle at a Local Family Farmhouse
Spend a half day immersed in traditional country-style life near central Kyoto
Miyama is a region made up of 57 hamlets scattered across a wide expanse of pristine mountains, just 50 kilometers (approx. 31 miles) north of Kyoto’s city center. For years, it was almost inaccessible to outsiders, connected only by ancient footpaths. Today, its residents remain highly protective of its rural charms, including its cuisine, and sustainable lifestyle choices.
Now, thanks to local programs, you can experience this unique region and its authentic rural lifestyles on a half-day visit. Choose from several different families that open their doors to visitors and share activities like harvesting in the fields, helping cook local dishes, or just leisurely strolling the village streets. Take advantage of this special chance to meet and interact with local people in this corner of Japan that has little changed since ancient times.
Access: From Kyoto Station, take the JR San-in Line to Hiyoshi Station (about 45 minutes). From there, take a Nantan city bus to Agake (40 minutes). The pick-up service to the various houses is from the nearby Kyoto Tamba Kogen Quasi-National Park Visitor Center, a 5-minute walk from Agake bus stop.
