E-bike and Picnic in the Charming Village of Miyama
Have fun cycling and picnicking in the Kyoto countryside
This activity starts when you pick up your e-bike at the Kyoto Tamba Kogen Quasi-National Park Visitor Center. (Japan is a mountainous country; e-bikes make cycling a lot less exhausting and a lot more fun.)
Your first destination will be whichever of the three designated eateries you have chosen to prepare the food for your picnic. It’s a good idea to select the restaurant based on how far you want to cycle, as the restaurants are varying distances away. To get to Kambee takes 15 minutes, while Ewa Land and Tautasya are 50 and 80 minutes away, respectively.
All three restaurants pride themselves on using seasonal ingredients. Kambee specializes in bento lunch boxes with onigiri and tempura. Ewa Land specializes in rice burgers with fried chicken, venison, or fish. Tautasya specializes in home-baked bread, organic vegetables, and local venison. When you pick up your lunch, the restaurant will tell you where the best local picnic spots are and how to reach them. The popular attraction in Miyama is the thatched roof village, Kayabuki no Sato. In addition to the thatched-roof houses set against a mountainous backdrop, there are also a couple of small museums, a picturesque old shrine, and two cafes to enjoy.
See the activity website for details on availability, restrictions, and other things you need to know in advance.
Access: From Kansai International Airport, take the Haruka Limited Express to JR Kyoto Station (approx. one hour and 20 minutes). From JR Kyoto Station, take the train to Hiyoshi Station (approx. 50 minutes). From there, take the Nantan City Bus and get off at Agake (approx. 50 minutes).
