Simose Art Museum: Art, Architecture, and Stunning Sea Views
A one-of-a-kind museum and accommodation complex designed by Shigeru Ban
This unique museum complex makes the best of its location, with panoramic views of Japan’s Inland Sea and the Setouchi Islands. While the museum offers scheduled exhibitions, it is also a fascinating representation of the work of Shigeru Ban, one of Japan’s most celebrated architects and the man responsible for the design of this remarkable place.
The facilities include a spacious main building and colorful box-like waterfront galleries that can be moved depending on the exhibitions—which include both traditional Japanese crafts and contemporary works. The site also features ten villas for overnight guests, including five Forest Villas, four of which are recreations of Ban’s previous works. The other Waterfront Villas feature glass fronts overlooking the Inland Sea, as well as geometric timber construction and interiors also created by the architect.
Completing the museum’s inviting atmosphere is the Emile Gallé Garden, based on the Art Nouveau craftsman’s natural themes, and a French restaurant focused on local delicacies.
Access: From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Hiroshima Station (one hour and 30 minutes). From there, take the JR Line train to Otake Station (about 40 minutes). From there, it is a 10-minute bus ride and a five-minute walk to the museum.
