A Luxurious Ryokan that Blends Japanese Tradition and Modern Taste

Situated in a beautiful old Japanese garden overlooking the sea, this ryokan offers the very best of the traditional and modern.

Ryokan Onomichi Nishiyama sits in an old tea garden where wealthy merchants of Onomichi once used to entertain their guests. The ryokan, which opened in 2023, has deliberately recycled many of the materials from an old inn that used to stand on the same site, from hanging scrolls and lighting fixtures to tableware and tea ceremony utensils.

Eight of the guest rooms are in lovingly restored detached villas which are placed around the garden, while the other three rooms are located in the main building. With magnificent views of the port, the Seto Inland Sea, and the gardens, the rooms are generously sized with a capacity of 1 to 4 people. The rooms combine traditional Japanese design, craftsmanship, and materials with fully modern bathrooms and luxurious modern bedding. Each room has a distinctive character and includes one-of-a-kind features such as a private outdoor bath, a private traditional tea room, or a rustic-style thatched roof.

Nestled between the mountains and the sea, Onomichi is famous for both its freshly caught fish and its delicious vegetables. The English-speaking chef at the restaurant utilizes local ingredients to create original Japanese-French fusion dishes, which can be paired with complementary wines and sake. There is an all-inclusive lounge for guests with tea and sake available all day. Locally made bikes are available for rent free of charge. Enjoy using these bikes to explore the back streets of Onomichi. The ryokan can also organize a trip on a fishing boat for you where you can try fishing for sea bream.

Access:
1. From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Sanyo Shinkansen to Fukuyama Station (about 1 hour). Change to the JR Sanyo Main Line and ride to Onomichi Station (20 minutes). From there, it is a 10-minute drive to the destination.
2. From Shin-Osaka Station, take the Sanyo Shinkansen to Shin-Onomichi Station (about 1 hour 30 minutes). From Shin-Onomichi Station, it is a 15-minute drive to the destination.
