Join a canoe adventure to spot wildlife on the Shiodomari River in Hakodate

Hakodate City, Hokkaido

The city of Hakodate is located on the southernmost tip of the massive island of Hokkaido and has long been a gateway to the wild north. Just a short drive from the city center or airport and you will find yourself at the Shiodomari, a protected river where nature lovers of all ages can explore the area on canoe tours.

With tours available year-round, in the summer, you can paddle through reflections of the lush greenery, which turns red and gold in autumn, while in the winter, the magical, snowy views give you a taste of Hokkaido’s northern landscapes.

As the river flows relatively gently, you will have plenty of time to observe the wildlife, fish, and birds (and even occasionally horses) that live in this northern ecosystem along the estuary of the Tsugaru Straits. Get a closer underwater view with an aquascope.

Enjoy a break with freshly ground and brewed coffee on the sandbanks, taking in the blissful quiet and peaceful nature of the Shiodomari River.

How to get there

Take a flight from Haneda Airport to Hakodate Airport (about 1 hour and 20 minutes). The meeting point is at Shinminato Port, which is a 30-minute drive from JR Hakodate Station or a 15-minute drive from Hakodate Airport.
