Cherry Blossom Viewing on Mt. Noro
HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Cherry Blossom Viewing on Mt. Noro
Kure City
Mt. Noro, overlooking the port of Kure in Hiroshima Prefecture, is a beautiful destination year-round, but especially so in spring. During the spring, travel along the Sazanami Skyline Road which stretches from Kure’s Kawajiri Town at the foot of the mountain to the 839-meter-high summit. The observation deck there has an unparalleled view out across the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. You can also clearly see the popular Tobishima Kaidō cycle route linking seven of the sea's islands. Take your time and stop for lunch or stay overnight at the Noro Kogen Lodge near the summit.
In spring, a variety of different cherry trees all come into bloom, creating a long tunnel of pink and white blossoms on the mountain. This awe-inspiring sight has long been a favorite subject for photographers. After cherry blossom season, the mountain turns into a lush green during summer and then golden hues burst through the canopy in autumn. Whatever the season, you’ll be treated to a spectacle.
First go to Hiroshima Station on the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen line accessible from Tokyo or Osaka. From Hiroshima Station, take the high speed Akiji Liner to Hiro Station, and then take the JR Kure Line to JR Aki-Kawajiri Station. The entire journey takes about 1 hour. Mt. Noro's observation deck is a 10-minute drive from JR Aki-Kawajiri Station.
