Unforgettable experiences at this symbol of Wakayama City in spring and autumn
Wakayama City, Wakayama Prefecture
Situated atop a hill overlooking central Wakayama, Wakayama Castle is a spectacular historical building that was also selected as one of Japan’s 100 best castles.
Wakayama Castle is surrounded by more than 600 cherry blossom trees that fill the castle grounds with soft pink petals each spring—usually the last week of March and first week of April. Lately, the cherry blossoms have been illuminated at night, making the castle the ideal place to enjoy cherry blossoms both by day and by night. Many people come to enjoy the nocturnal view of the castle and its surroundings, which is very different from the scene during the day.
In autumn, Engyokaku Pavilion and its surrounding autumn foliage are another popular attraction at Wakayama Castle. Located in the garden pond, the pavilion was constructed according to the luxurious architectural style of medieval Japan. It blends beautifully with the autumn leaves, which can be seen from late November to early December. The beautiful fall colors reflected in the garden pond are a must-see.
