Evening Tour to Ginzan Onsen

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Evening Tour to Ginzan Onsen

Experience the wintry scenery of Ginzan Onsen without having to worry about accommodations or transportation on this tour departing from Tendo.

Tohoku Tourism Promotion Organization

Ginzan Onsen in Yamagata Prefecture is nestled deep in the mountains and is popular with visitors who wish to experience the traditional townscape lit up by gas lights after dark, along with the relaxing hot springs.

Although staying at one of the ryokan inns of Ginzan Onsen to enjoy the snowy night views would be ideal, due to the town’s popularity it can be difficult to book accommodations, and public transportation can be quite crowded.

This evening tour allows you to experience the photogenic snowy atmosphere of Ginzan Onsen without needing to book a room, taking you there directly from Tendo Onsen, a nearby hot spring resort with excellent bullet train connections to Tokyo.

Arriving at the retro hot spring resort just as the sun is setting, you can enjoy strolling through the nostalgic atmosphere of the gas-lit main street, check out the illuminations along the riverside, and enjoy a drink in one the cafes that line the main street.

The tour runs from December to March. Be sure to check the website for availability and dates.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Yamagata Shinkansen to Tendo Station (around 3 hours). The meeting place is about a 20-minute walk from the station.
