Nanto City

UNESCO World Heritage Sites Ainokura Gassho-zukuri Village and Suganuma Gassho-zukuri Village are both situated in the area known as Gokayama. The area boasts a Japanese rural landscape that remains largely unchanged. Gokayama folk music and dance were passed down over generations and are now considered important intangible cultural assets. “Mugiya-bushi” and ”Kokiriko-bushi” specifically are two of the three main traditional songs of Toyama Prefecture. Every fall, locals to this day dance to “Mugiya-bushi” and “Kokiriko-bushi” in both Shimonashi and Kaminashi.

How to get there

From Haneda Airport, take a flight to Toyama Airport (about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes). From Toyama Airport, take the bus to Toyama Station. From Toyama Station, take the train to Takaoka Station, then travel to Johana Station (about 1 hour 40 minutes).
