A sea of colorful flowers carpets this Chiba estate each June

Hattori Hydrangea House

The rewards of tending to the natural world are something anyone can enjoy, and Hattori Hydrangea House packs everything we treasure into a quaint estate in the countryside of Mobara City, Chiba.

The main draw of the 18,000m2 Hattori estate is its hydrangeas (ajisai), 250 varieties of which explode into bloom for slightly more than a month each June. An entire hillside is carpeted in a sea of pink, blue, and white, with the color of the flowers changing with the acidity of the soil.

Hydrangeas were first cultivated in Japan, and owner Mr. Hattori spends most of the year preparing the flowers for bloom. The collection of over 10,000 hydrangeas is the result of many years of hard work and the ongoing investment of time and energy. The estate is a source of personal pride for Mr. Hattori as well as something for you to look forward to on an easy day trip out of Tokyo.

To keep the entrance fee down and give you the opportunity to taste some of the regional produce during your visit, Hattori Hydrangea House also sells locally grown fruit during the peak season. Purchasing some is one more way for you to support this horticultural gem, just over an hour from central Tokyo.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Keiyo Line Rapid for about 1 hour to JR Mobara Station. From there, Hattori Hydrangea House is 10 minutes by car.
