Japan’s Unique Tuna Fishing

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Japan’s Unique Tuna Fishing

Experience a rare opportunity to catch tuna yourself in Japan, in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture

Ehime Prefectural Tourism & Local Products Association

Challenge yourself by fishing for tuna in the beautiful Seto Inland Sea!

Ehime Prefecture is one of the top bluefin tuna farming production areas in Japan. The breeding site is in the Uwa Sea, located at the entrance of the Seto Inland Sea from the Pacific Ocean between Shikoku and Kyushu. Fresh tides are constantly flowing into these waters, allowing even tuna, which are sensitive to their environment, to thrive.

The tour begins at Kisaia Square in Uwajima, a beautiful mountain-ringed port city on the Uwa Sea. From the harbor, you will take a boat to a fish farm located offshore. Participants can fish for, as well as feed, the tuna swimming in a live tank. The tuna swim so fast, you will be amazed by their dynamism. The caught fish are brought back to the port, where they are filleted in front of tour participants by professional staff. The staff will provide explanations about each part of the tuna, as well as about Japanese culture related to tuna fishing. And of course, the tuna will be served to you as sashimi or sushi.

This is a unique tour that guarantees you a thrilling experience.
