Miyagi Prefecture

Matsushima Rikyu is a sightseeing complex located in Miyagi Prefecture at the heart of Matsushima Bay, one of the fabled Three Views of Japan. Opened in 2020, this multi-purpose facility encapsulates the spirit of Matsushima into a stunning single-volume structure and was envisioned to be a place that would delineate the mesmerizing beauty of its namesake bay.

The word “rikyu” literally means “detached palace” in Japanese. While the mention of palace could spur images of magnificent structures from a bygone era, Matsushima Rikyu presents itself as a variegated continuum between traditional and modern Japanese aesthetic sensibilities. A pagoda serves as center piece of the compound, while a modern rooftop terrace offers visitors a sweeping view of the surrounding nature, including Matsushima Bay itself.

Despite its appearance, Matsushima Rikyu is actually a full-fledged tourist facility with so many things to do that it is a destination in its own right. Fill up on seafood at one of the restaurants or rent a BBQ set and grill your own. Watch craftsmen create a kokeshi doll by hand or paint one yourself. Browse local goods in stores or pay a visit to the small museum dedicated to the history of Matsushima Bay.

Matsushima Rikyu is surrounded by a gorgeous Japanese garden with cherry blossom and maple trees, which is lit up at night with beautiful illuminations and permanent projection mapping displays. The complex also features a multilingual tourist information center, making Matsushima Rikyu the ideal starting point to explore the natural wonders of Matsushima Bay. A new local landmark, this “palace” is sure to be the highlight of any trip to Matsushima!

How to get there
