Peaceful Tea Terrace in Shizuoka

Sip tea from an outdoor tatami-floored terrace overlooking the green tea fields in Suruga

SURUGA Marketing and Tourism Bureau

Travel to the important tea-producing prefecture of Shizuoka to experience a private tea break on a raised terrace overlooking the manicured tea plantations along the Oigawa River. While part of Suruga, this green haven feels removed from the hustle and bustle of the city.

The Tamura family has cultivated tea along the mountainsides for thirteen generations. When the current owner was a child, he would sometimes help out in the fields and enjoy the bliss of taking a break and looking at the views from the slopes. Making a terrace in the tea fields was one of his dreams, which he made a reality by constructing an open-air tea terrace using local cypress from the Oigawa River basin. A local tatami shop made the mats, and now visitors can enjoy sipping tea from this one-of-a-kind tatami terrace.

The organic tea served changes seasonally, with guests being served two varieties from among single-origin green tea (sencha), Japanese black tea (kocha), and matcha, along with carefully selected traditional sweets.

Groups of 2 to 10 people can book a private 90-minute slot to relax above the tea fields.

How to get there

From Tokyo Station, take the Shinkansen bullet train to Shizuoka Station (about 1 hour). Switch to the JR Tokaido Line to Kanaya Station (about 30 minutes), then take the Oigawa Railway to Ieyama Station (about 35 minutes). The tea terrace is about a 30-minute hike up the hill from the station.
