Crossing the 3000m-high peaks of the Northern Japan Alps, the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is one of the most spectacular touristic alpine routes in the world. With snow walls up to 20m high in spring, a myriad of flowers in the summer, and stunning colors in the fall, this alpine journey is an enchanting natural world above the clouds with scenic beauty.
Shomyo Falls, with a 350-meter drop; Midagahara, with its beautiful and fantastic marshland; Mikuriga-ike, with its beautifully clear lake; and Kurobe Dam, famous for being the highest dam in Japan, are just a few of the many attractions that will impress you no matter what time of year you visit.
How to get there
By Shinkansen bullet train:
From Tokyo Station, take the JR Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama Station (about 2 hours). Walk to Dentetsu-Toyama Station (about 10 minutes). Take the Toyama Chiho railway Tateyama Line to Tateyama Station (about 1 hour). The alpine route begins there.
By plane:
From Haneda Airport, take a flight to Toyama Airport (1 hour). Take a bus to JR Toyama Station (25 minutes). Then walk to Dentetsu-Toyama Station (about 10 minutes). Take the Toyama Chiho railway Tateyama Line to Tateyama station (about 1 hour). The alpine route begins there.
