Learn about the unique culture of life in The Ultimate Snow Country
Tokamachi City, Niigata Prefecture
The story of Tokamachi City, "The Ultimate Snow Country, Tokamachi," was recognized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs as a Japanese Heritage in 2020. The Tokamachi City Museum introduces the unique culture of life in the snow country of Niigata by exhibiting the Tokamachi Snow Equipment, which has been designated as a National Important Cultural Property, as well as houses that have been reconstructed to recreate life in winter. An old actual house, which was relocated to the museum and reproduces the winter life of a farmer in the Taisho period (1912-1926), is particularly useful in understanding the foundation of Japan's development. The Tokamachi City Museum also displays flame-style pottery, one of the only six National Treasures from the Jomon period (10,000BCE - 300 BCE) in Japan, and uses the latest technologies, such as projection mapping and VR, to teach visitors about the production process and history of textiles from ancient times to the present. All exhibits are accompanied by English commentary, and English audio guides are available for rental.
