Yuki Onsen

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Yuki Onsen

A hot-spring village, close to Hiroshima, popular since ancient times

The City of Hiroshima

People have been visiting the natural, healing waters in the tiny village of Yuki Onsen for more than 1,500 years. Surrounded by forested hills, northwest of Hiroshima, Yuki is a tranquil setting in which to relax and enjoy the quintessential Japanese onsen hot-spring experience in radium-rich springs that are piped straight from the ground.

Wedged between the hills and wrapped in nature, Yuki is the perfect place to relax and see the changing seasons, year-round. Take a dip in one of the lovely open-air hot-spring baths, known as rotenburo, that overlook the clear Minochi River, which flows through the heart of the village.

You can also find adventure here, such as canyoning in the local gorges. And, don’t miss the local culinary specialities: ayu (sweetfish) and konnyaku yam (devil’s tongue).

Less than two hours from central Hiroshima, Yuki Onsen makes the perfect day trip from the city. However, if you’d like to stay overnight, there are two accommodations, Kajika-so and Yuki Lodge.

If you are staying longer, the village is also not far from Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima, and the town of Iwakuni, with its historical arched bridge, known as Kintai-kyō. If you like hiking, head for the trails around picturesque Sandankyo Gorge.

How to get there

Yuki Onsen is 70 minutes by bus from Itsukaichi Station (south exit), which is accessible from Hiroshima Station by JR Sanyo Line.
