Yuzawa Winter Fireworks

HOME > Japan’s Local Treasures > Yuzawa Winter Fireworks

Snow country, fireworks kingdom

Niigata Prefecture

Niigata is famous for its winter skiing, especially at Yuzawa’s ski resorts. Located only 70 minutes away from Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen, the area has 12 ski resorts that offer a wide variety of courses to suit every need, from beginners to advanced levels. After a day on the slopes, you can complete your experience with après ski activities.

Multiple ski resorts throughout Yuzawa Town host original winter fireworks displays, which light up the slopes every year on specific days from December to March. You can watch their colorful displays from the mountainside - a particularly rare event in Japan.

On top of that, you can watch skiers coasting down the hills while carrying flaming torches, and see charming snow candles that illuminate the grounds, among other well-crafted events at the resort. A fantastic scene of light and shadow unfolds over the mountain’s silver snow each year.

How to get there

Ski resorts are located 10-50 minutes by bus from the JR Echigo-Yuzawa Station, which is about 70 minutes from JR Tokyo Station on the Joetsu Shinkansen.
