Sasebo Burgers

 

 

Sasebo is the city that serves original Sasebo Burgers. The burger recipes have said to be directly originated from the US Naval Base which started making it. These burgers are special as it will be handmade only when a customer orders for a burger. There are about 10 places now which are officially certified by the city that serve the original Sasebo Burgers.

Tori-Ten (Chicken Tempura)

 

 

Tori-Ten is a local cuisine of central Oita. This chicken tempura looks like a fried chicken from the first glance. The cooking style of this dish varies uniquely depending on the shop. Some Tori-Ten has its batter that is exceptionally light and fluffy and some are deep-fried twice to make their batter super crispy. Some Tori-Ten comes with different vegetable dressings or even eaten with ponzu (citrus-based sauce), vinegar or soy sauce.

Shirokuma Shave Ice

 

 

Shirokuma Shave Ice is originated from Kagoshima city. This dessert dish is shaved ice with condensed milk that is served with canned fruits and red bean paste. This sweet specialty can be found at many cafes and restaurants in the city.

Ika-no-Ikizukuri (Live Squid Sashimi)

 

 

Yobuko town in Saga prefecture, facing the Genkai Sea in the northwestern part of Kyushu, is a town of squid. This fresh squid dish in Yobuko is a freshly made dish with an outstanding taste. The squid looks transparently thin and all squids are still alive right before preparation. It is recommended to eat with wasabi and soy sauce.

Horse Meat Sashimi (Basashi)

 

 

 

Kumamoto’s signature dish, horse meat sashimi (Basashi) is the most frequently enjoyed dish. It can be garnished with many different types of herbs and condiments such as soy sauce, grated ginger and garlic or minced leek. Since the fat in horse meat melts in a lower temperature, even the well-marbled meat can be refreshing when eaten. You can also find sushi using horse meat sashimi in Kumamoto prefecture!

Motsunabe (Hot Pot Stew)

 

 

Motsunabe is a kind of traditional Japanese hot pot dish in Fukuoka and it is popular in Japan. “Motsu” is made from beef or pork tripe or other offal. This hot pot stew comes with vegetables such as cabbage and green onion. The ingredients are then simmered with miso, soy sauce, hot pepper and garlic. In Fukuoka, motsu nabe remains popular for both locals and tourists.

Chicken Nanban

 

 

Nobeoka city in Miyazaki is said to be the birthplace of Chicken Nanban. It is a classic menu that is found in most restaurants in Miyazaki. The basic step to make a Chicken Nanban dish is by frying the chicken in oil. Then the chicken will be lightly seasoned with sweet vinegar. And at last, tartar sauce is added and then the dish is ready to be indulged.
