Autumn meditation retreat

Recommended season

DAY 1

Take a limited express train from Osaka to Eiheiji Temple in Fukui Prefecture. This is a Zen temple that was established more than 770 years ago, and many monks still train here. As you step into the temple, you will be struck by the dignified air and the large cedars surrounding it. Guided by a Zen concierge, you will experience a full course of Zen meditation, sutra copying, and vegetarian cuisine. it is a day for calm contemplation and meditation to achieve inner peace.

DAY 2

Wake up before sunrise, and unify your spirit at the "Morning Service," where you will read sutras with monks. After the morning service, go to the shore of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan and join a walking tour led by a local guide. You will visit a former inn town with its elegant streets and wood crafts. In the evening, check into a glamping facility. After dinner, unwind at the on-site bar or on the deck.

DAY 3

Get active in the morning with a private canoe until you check out. After enjoying the area with stops at Hikone Castle and the water village of Omi Hachiman, move west along Lake Biwa to Otsu. Upon arrival, take a tour of the local shopping district. While walking around the city, you will have dinner at a local restaurant introduced by the concierge. Experience living like a local on this trip!

DAY 4

Visit Mt. Hiei, a mountain that has long been considered an object of worship and revered as a god. Take a local train to Sakamoto Hieizanguchi, visit the solemn Hiyoshi Taisha Shrine, and then take the cable car for a panoramic view of Lake Biwa with its brilliant autumn colors. Of course, the autumn leaves on Mt. Hiei are also breathtaking. Take the cable car and a local train to Kyoto. At night, explore the streets of Kyoto.

DAY 5

On the last day, go sightseeing in Kyoto. Take advantage of guided tours to deepen your knowledge. We especially recommend the guided tour of Nijo Castle, a World Heritage Site. The tour will take you to areas that are not open to the public, making it much more enjoyable than a regular sightseeing tour. If you have time, you can also visit the Kyoto Imperial Palace, the former residence of the emperor, which is accessible on foot.
