A journey through Japanese food and art

Recommended season

DAY 1

Take the train to Tokamachi in Niigata. The main attraction is the Art Festival of Earth, Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, one of the world's largest international art festivals, held every three years in places such as Hoshitoge in the Matsudai area, famous for its terraced rice fields. Even when the exhibition is not open, there are always around 200 works on display, including works that make the most of nature, abandoned schools, and empty houses. This is an excellent opportunity to see art in a snowy region.

DAY 2

On the second day, you can experience the snow in snowy Tokamachi. In addition to skiing and snowboarding, the Matsunoyama Onsen Ski Resort also offers a range of other snow activities such as air boarding and snow biking, both of which can be enjoyed with boots. In addition, the day camp at the resort is great fun. Get lost in the snow and feel like a child again. 提供:(一社)十日町市観光協会

DAY 3

Take the train to Tsubame Sanjo. After having lunch at Tsubame Back Fat Ramen, which is filled with extra thick noodles and elegantly-flavored pork back fat, let's visit the workshop of Gyokusendo, which makes hammered copperware, a masterpiece of intangible cultural heritage. The traditional craftsmanship of creating a seamless kettle from a single copper plate is breathtaking! Stay overnight at Yahiko Onsen has been a great place to relax travelers visiting Yahiko-jinja Shrine. Get rejuvenated after your trip.

DAY 4

The next day, you will attend a lecture on sake in Niigata. Niigata, with its good quality water and rice, is one of the leading brewing regions for sake. During the lecture, you will learn about its history, how to complement it with food, and other essential knowledge about sake. Afterward, take a tour of the Furumachi Kagai gastronomic district, where you can taste delicious food and famous sake. You will try sashimi of fresh fish caught off the coast of Sado and Murakami beef, a local specialty.

DAY 4 ANOTHER ROUTE

For an alternative route on the fourth day, enjoy a sushi-making experience. Niigata is the perfect place to try making sushi, as it is known for producing some of the best-branded rice and fresh, fatty fish. Even beginners can learn how to make sushi as you will be given detailed instructions. Afterward, take a stroll around the city and enjoy the snow-covered historical buildings, Japanese gardens, and other artistic attractions.
