Earth-Friendly Art: Lacquered Bamboo Straw Workshop

lacquered bamboo straw workshop

Experience local tradition and reduce your plastic use

On this tour, visitors will have the chance to meet and talk directly with a local lacquer-ware artisan in Northern Miyagi Prefecture. After being invited into Mr. Sato’s workshop space, learn more about the history, tradition and techniques of his craft before trying your own hand at decorating a beautiful lacquered bamboo straw. With each use of this straw, not only will you reduce your use of plastic disposables, but you will recall a fond memory of your journey to the Japanese countryside. Included in the experience is a delicious lunch of local Japanese cuisine (vegetarian options available), also served in traditional lacquer-ware bowls and dishes. Experience the local traditions and creating the crafts of Tohoku to minimise your ecological footprint.

Accommodation packages at nearby Onuma Ryokan (Naruko hot springs) also available, including use of eight different hot-spring baths, six of which can be used privately.
