Although the most famous "Neputa Festival" is held in Aomori Prefecture of the Tohoku region, another "Neputa Festival" takes place here in Chiran, Minamikyushu City. "Chiran Neputa Festival" originated from the intercultural exchange with Hirakawa City in Aomori and features a parade of floats 5 meters high and 4 meters wide and long, decorated with large warrior, ghost, and martial pictures while people chanting "Ya-ya-do" march through the town in the evening. Visitors can take part in the event, joining in with the local kids pulling the floats to the sound of Japanese drums and flutes. Floats created by local high school students are also in the parade, making the festival all the more exciting. You can experience the hottest time of summer in Chiran with this event. Floats are lit up all at once at the starting signal for fireworks, which is too good to miss!
