On a vast, reclaimed landmass facing the Ariake Sea, fields of dazzling sunflowers stretch as far as the eye can see. More than 500,000 large sunflowers bloom there, proudly facing the sun. The fields of sunflowers swaying in the breeze blowing from the Ariake Sea look just like a golden carpet and make a beautiful contrast with the blue summer sky.
"Yanagawa Sunflower Garden" opens every year only during the blooming season. This year it can be visited from July 18th to July 30th. The garden atmosphere changes not only depending on the time of day, but also from day to night. From sunset until 9pm the fields are lit-up and the strong-looking sunflowers you see in the sunlight reveal a different face. The contrast between the gold-glowing illuminated sunflowers and the night sky creates a fantastical landscape.
Sunflowers show their beauty only for two weeks. After the blooming, the flower heads become heavier as the seeds ripen, and start leaning towards the ground. The fleeting nature of sunflowers, which can be enjoyed only for a short period, is surely one of their attractive features.
Local specialty dishes and farm products are available for sale at the garden facilities and various events can be enjoyed during the opening period, such as a fireworks festival starting at 8pm on July 22nd, free sunflower seeds handed out on July 22nd and 23rd from 10am to the first 100 people on each day, a mudskipper fishing competition in the Ariake Sea and Yanagawa's specialty eel catching event. During the opening period, a shuttle bus will run every hour between Nishitetsu Yanagawa Station (East Exit) and Yanagawa Sunflower Garden. Although the entrance is free, 500 yen is requested as a contribution to the maintenance of the garden. Please show your support!
