Kunenan Villa and Garden

Built in 1892, the vacation house of Yataro Itami, an important businessman from Saga, has a landscape garden with a total area of 6,800 square meters that was designed and built over a nine-year period from 1900 to 1909. Filled with beautiful rural charms such as a reed covered roof, mud walls, small windows with bamboo lattices, and a bamboo veranda, this vacation house was designed elaborately from corner to corner in an early modern Sukiya style, the combination of tea ceremony house and Shoin style. In the spacious landscape garden, azaleas, maple trees and other trees are planted, creating seasonal beauty all year around. The moss-covered ground is almost like a green-carpeted floor and it provides a beautiful contrast to the maple trees adorned in red in autumn, which invites you back to an elegant space from the Meiji period. Designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty in the February 1995, it is open twice a year in spring and autumn to the public to enjoy fresh green and colored leaves. This coming autumn, it opens for nine days from the 15th to 23rd of November, from 8:30 to 16:00. A numbered ticket handed out from 8 a.m. is required. Don’t miss this precious opportunity!
