High quality sweets are available in Fukuoka City, where a special food culture has been well developed.
One of the best-known name brand shops is “Furansugashi Jurokku” (“French Confectionery Shop 16th Ward”), which was established in 1981. Its “Dacquoise”, created by the owner chef after he trained in France, is now regarded as a representative sweet of Fukuoka City. Caramel cream is sandwiched in light-textured, almond flavored dough.
Another well-known sweet shop is “Chocolate Shop” established in 1942 and operated first by the founder, who had been in Europe in the 1930s to improve his skills as a chocolatier, and now by his son. Authentic chocolate lovingly made by two generations with strong passion toward chocolate can be enjoyed here.
One of the Japanese sweet shops representing Hakata is “Ishimura Manseido”, established in 1905, whose well-known item “Tsuru no Ko” (“baby crane”) has more than a 100-year history, first produced five years after the establishment of this shop. This Japanese sweet, using marshmallow as skin with yellow-colored sweet bean paste inside, has a mild and mellow taste.
