The seasonal allure of Naruko Gorge

Search for the best view of the colored leaves from below in the valley, on the bridge, or the observation platform.

How to Get There

The gorge is located in the middle of Nakayamadaira Onsen and Naruko Onsen stations, a 30-minute walk from Nakayamadaira Onsen station and a 60-minute walk from Naruko Onsen station.

A seasonal bus operates from Naruko Onsen, though it can be crowded during the autumn season, so plan accordingly.

Mountains on fire

Journey to the gorge from late October to early November and witness brilliant oranges, golden yellows, and crimson reds of the mountainside. Start off at the Narukokyo Resthouse and make your way to the adjacent viewing platform to see Ofukazawa Bridge.

Walk along the trails

The steep stairs by the resthouse go all the way to the bottom of the deep gorge. The Naruko Gorge Walking Trail begins here, where you can view the rushing river and the rocky walls around.

Most of the trail is still closed (as of April 24th, 2020) due to necessary repairs related to the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, but you can go up to Ofukazawa Bridge, where you will be rewarded with a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.
