Six hundred and twenty meters of Pacific Ocean paradise

With pristine white sand curving around a bay of sparkling water, this beach is as close to a Pacific Ocean paradise as you can find. A sister beach to Waikiki Beach in Hawaii, Shirara Beach is known as the best beach in Kansai.

How to Get There

The beach is a 10-minute bus ride from JR Shirahama Station; alight at the Shirahama bus stop for the beach.

Shirahama Station is on the Kinokuni Line—part of the Kisei Main Line. It is also convenient by train from Shin-Osaka Station (2.5 hours).

Quick Facts

The beach's white sand was shipped in from Australia

The beach has the earliest starting swimming season on mainland Japan

Swimmers and sunbathers get in early

Opening each year before any other beach resort town on the main island of Honshu, Shirarahama "officially" heralds Japan's beach season, making it a favorite with sun-lovers.

Firework festival

The summer season offers even more beach-bound excitement as nightly firework shows light up the night sky. The biggest firework events of the area take place here on July 30th and August 10th, with over 3,000 fireworks shooting up into the sky.
