A Warm, Welcoming Hostel in the Heart of Historic Tsuchiyu Onsen

Easy immersion into local hot spring culture

Japan's deep tradition of bathing need not be daunting—especially at Yumori Onsen Hostel by Sansuiso. In the heart of the quaint hot spring town of Tsuchiyu Onsen, this warm, welcoming environment is the perfect spot for discovering the joys of the area's ancient waters. With use dating back over 1,400 years, these natural alkaline springs provide long-cherished beautifying properties. And even the inked among you can unwind with peace of mind in the hostel's large public bath or private tubs: all are tattoo-friendly, unlike many in Japan.

With six room styles to choose from, you're sure to find one to suit your needs. Whether you prefer to relax in traditional Japanese tatami rooms or bed down in plusher surroundings, enjoy tranquil quarters overlooking a gently flowing river and leafy forest. A wheelchair-accessible suite, spacious group rooms, and budget-friendly dormitories are also available.

Whip up a meal in the sleek shared kitchen and chat with fellow guests in the comfortable wide lounge. Browse the library's extensive collection of English and Japanese books and enjoy a quiet moment over an aromatic coffee or craft beer. English-speaking staff can help make bookings and provide advice on local attractions.

Located in Bandai-Asahi National Park, natural wonders abound. Hike the scenic trail from Onuma to Menuma marshes, whose glassy waters reflect the changing seasons. Along with the magnificent autumn foliage, the area sees the blossoming of dogtooth violets, mountain azaleas, waterlilies, and cherry blossoms. Stroll through the streets of the charming hot spring resort town and treat your feet to a well-deserved soak in the many public footbaths. Or, to experience local craftsmanship firsthand, paint your own wooden Kokeshi doll in a nearby workshop.

Access: From Tokyo Station, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Fukushima Station (about one hour 30 minutes). The hostel has a complimentary shuttle bus service from the station.
