Mount Adatara is full of places to enjoy the autumn colors

Fukushima Prefecture Tourism and Local Products Association

Mount Adatara in central Fukushima Prefecture is a great place to go hiking in the autumn, where you can take in the fresh air and contemplate the vivid foliage of the forest-covered mountains.

For those who are not keen on hiking, there is a cable car that cuts out a lot of the climbing. Just follow the Okudake Trailhead, which starts at the Adatara Kogen Ski Resort, and board one of the gondola lifts. Once you disembark, you will be only a short walk away from the peak. The summit, which has an altitude of 1,700 meters, will reward you with breathtaking views.

Once you get back to the foot of the mountain, take some time to unwind by soaking in the hot springs at Okudake no Yu, located near the trailhead, or at one of the hot spring facilities at nearby Dake Onsen.

The best time to visit to see the foliage at its peak is usually from late September to mid-October.

How to get there

Take the Shinkansen bullet train from Tokyo Station to Fukushima Station.
